[Below is one nights labor on an attempt to understand the First Enochian call, made 11/26/99. These will be followed by attempts to understand the each call in order. For Gemetric and symbolic Analysis of the Enochian, I used my own number value system, and compared the achieved values to the Hebrew values. I am using Hebrew only because it is more established and because I have yet to compile a Enochian Language Sepher Sephiroth. I am claiming no real understanding of Enochian; this work is apart of my own preliminary study of Enochian Magick. My key to the Enochian follows the essay.]
The First Call
Letters: 350
Gemetria: 15993 = 3 * 3 * 1777
Analysis:
"I reign over you, says the God of Justice..."
A declaration of rulership. "Iad Balt" (God of Justice) in Enochian Gemetria equals 349, a prime number. Unfortunately, I can only find one word that shares this number: MQTR; Incense (Hebrew), which suggests both sacrifice and the element of air.
"in power exalted above the firmaments of wrath..."
The "firmaments of wrath" is possibly a reference to the element of air being used as an instrument of divine retribution. This, in association "justice", seems to begin to suggest Libra. Iad Balt claims that its power is exhalted above this - that its function is beyond merely the execution of judgment. Iad Balt is still the speaker.
"...in Whose hands the sun is as a sword, and the moon as a penetrating fire..."
The sun illuminates truth - is like a sword because it cuts away at all illusion. The moon rules over the darkest times in a mortal's of life, but in the hands of the God of Justice, these periods become guiding lights. The sun is the external world which cuts away at all falsehood within the self; the moon is the internal world which guides the individual through the darkness. Iad Balt is still the speaker.
"...Who measures your garments in the midst of my vestures, and trusses you together as the palm of my hands..." (Vestures is an antiquated word meaning 'cloths'. To truss is to bind tightly.)
Iad Balt is making the enochian angels out of its own cloth, out of its own self. In many ways, this is comparable to the words found in the Genesis of the Bible, which states that mankind is made in the image of God itself. Garments are also allusional to The Hermit, Atu IX, as nakedness is considered to be bold, and to cloth one's self, humble. Iad Balt made these angels well. Palms suggest the Hebrew letter Kaph, which is associated with the planet Jupiter, mercy, and good tidings. Hands suggest the Hebrew letter Iod, which is associated with the Zodiac sign Virgo, not to mention the similarity between the Hebrew word IVD and the Enochian word IAD, which both enumerates to 20 (by their respective systems), the value of Kaph.
"...Whose seats I garnished with the fire of gathering..."
I am not exactly sure how to interpret the words "fire of gathering;" perhaps it is something akin to the Fire Qadosh mentioned in Liber Ararita... By gemetria the two have little in relation: ASh QDVSh (Fire Holy) = 711 = 3 * 3 * 79 and Prge Aldi (Fire Gathering) = 219 =ð3 * 73.
"...Who beautified your garments with admiration..."
Beauty eludes to Venus, which is the ruler of Libra. Admiration eludes to humility or Virgo. Iad Balt is still speaking.
"...to Whom I made a law to govern the Holy Ones..."
Again, law and governing both refer to Libra, Adjustment, Atu VIII. Note that the 'law' is singular. Note also that the law is for the governership of the Holy Ones, not the punishment of the wicked.
"...Who delivered you a rod with the ark of knowledge."
The wand has long been associated with the Hebrew letter Iod. The rod is a variation of the wand that eludes to rulership. The ark of knowledge refers to Iod and Virgo again, as the ark (which is an archaic word for a place of shelter or refuge) is here being cited as the storing place for knowledge, and Virgo symbolizes hidden wisdom or knowledge. The rod is given with the ark of knowledge - not after or before. The two items show that knowledge does not come with out responsibility. Here, Iad Balt ends his speech.
"Moreover, you lifted your voices and sware obedience and faith to Him that lives, and who triumphs..."
The mouth, from which a voice emanate, is the orifice of the head which Mercury, the planet that rules Virgo, is associated. The voice also suggests the throat, which is dominated by Da'ath, the hidden sephirah, which means "Knowledge" in Hebrew. Obedience and faith are both qualities of humility. The Name Iadpil (He who Lives) is similar to in meaning to the Hebrew name of God associated with Yesod (ShDI AL ChI, The Almightly Living God ). Triumph is one quality of The Chariot (Atu VII), which is associated with Cancer in which is ruled by the planet Luna. ðThese two lunar references is to further identify the deity with Da'ath, which lies on the path Gimel (associated with Luna) on the Tree of Life. ð
This is the magickian speaking in praise of the deity.
"...Whose beginning is not, nor end cannot be..."
Standard eternal God spiel. Identifies the Iad Balt with AIN ("Nothingness", Hebrew).
"...Who shines as a flame in the midst of your palace, and reigns amongst you as the balance of righteousness and truth."
The flame in the midst of the palace is possibly a reference to the Qabalistic teaching of Adonai being the palace of YHVH (ADNI [Adonai, Lord] = 65 = HIKL [Temple/Palace]). Here, instead of reigning over them, Iad Balt reigns amongst them - perhaps to show that Iad Balt is connected to all things on all levels. Again, balance righteousness and truth are all associated with Libra. ð
"Move, therefore, and show yourselves; open the mysteries of your creation; be friendly unto me; for I am the servent of the same God as you, and true worshipper of the Highest".
This seems to be a regular theme through out the calls...
I now call attention to the repetition of the Libra-Virgo theme, which for me, clearly associates the god of this call with the highest Aether, LIL. The enochian gemetric value of LIL is 49, which is the same value of the Hebrew words: AL ChI (Living God; Similar to "He who Lives"), ChMA (Heat, fury; Possibly referring to the "Fire of Gathering"), LIDH (Birth, nativity, bringing fourth), MDH (A measuring), MT (The Rod of Aaron), and GLVI (Unveiling, revelation).
Although I haven't developed an opinion on what this call could be used for. What I do know is that I do not agree with the two schemes concerning how the Calls are used that I have read so far: The Golden Dawn's Scheme and Mr. Donald Tyson's Scheme.
